Myths vs Truths
Chiropractic has been around for a long time, but there are still plenty of myths floating around about what chiropractors do, who they can help and what an adjustment actually involves.
Here are a few of the big ones.
-
Truth: Chiropractic care is about much more than an adjustment.
A chiropractor may use hands-on treatment such as mobilisation, soft-tissue therapy or manipulation, but care can also include movement assessment, exercise advice, stretching, ergonomic support, education and practical strategies to help you feel more confident moving.
The “crack” some people hear during an adjustment is simply gas moving within a joint. It is not bones grinding, being pushed back into place or “put back in.”
-
Truth: Your care plan should be individual.
Some people come in for a short period to help manage a new episode of pain. Others choose occasional appointments as part of their broader approach to staying active and managing recurring aches and stiffness.
There is no one-size-fits-all schedule. Your plan should be based on your symptoms, goals, lifestyle, response to care and what feels right for you.
-
Truth: Back pain is common, but it is not the only reason people seek chiropractic care.
Many people see a chiropractor for neck pain, headaches, shoulder discomfort, hip pain, sporting injuries, work-related aches and general stiffness.
Chiropractors assess how the body is moving as a whole, not just the area that is sore. Sometimes a stiff upper back may be contributing to neck discomfort, or reduced hip movement may affect how the low back is coping.
-
Truth: Treatment should be explained, tailored and comfortable for you.
Not everyone wants an adjustment, and not everyone needs one. There are many ways to approach care, including gentle mobilisation, soft-tissue therapy, exercise-based care and movement advice.
You should always feel able to ask questions, share concerns and say what you are or are not comfortable with. Your care should be collaborative.
-
Truth: The best posture is usually the next posture.
There is no single “perfect” posture that everyone needs to hold. Our bodies generally cope best when we change positions, move regularly and build strength and capacity for the things we need to do.
Rather than aiming to sit perfectly still, think about taking movement breaks, adjusting your set-up and keeping your body moving throughout the day.
-
Truth: Pain is more complex than that.
Pain can be influenced by many things, including stress, sleep, previous injuries, activity levels, workload, fear of movement and how much recovery your body is getting.
That does not mean pain is “all in your head.” It means your experience matters, and understanding the bigger picture can help guide a more effective plan.
The bottom line
Chiropractic care should not be about quick fixes or making big promises. It should be about understanding your body, helping you move with more confidence and giving you practical tools to support your health outside the clinic.
Whether your goal is to get back to the gym, feel more comfortable at work, keep up with your kids or simply move with less restriction, care should be tailored to you.
