Understanding Stress Through a Chiropractic Lens

The Three Types of Stress & How They Shape the Body

At The Conscious Chiro, one thing we talk about often is how connected the body, brain, and nervous system really are.

Stress isn’t just something we feel emotionally - it’s something the whole body experiences.

And while stress is a normal part of life, ongoing stress can begin to influence how we move, recover, sleep, focus, and feel in our everyday lives.

In chiropractic, we often look at stress in three categories:

  1. Physical Stress

This is often the easiest type of stress to recognise.

Things like: sitting for long periods, repetitive movements, injuries, lack of movement, long hours at a desk, poor sleep positions, overtraining

The body can sometimes feel a little like a backpack

At first, carrying a few things feels manageable. But over time, if we keep adding more without unloading anything, eventually even small tasks can start to feel heavier.

Sometimes physical stress can show up as:

  • neck and shoulder tension

  • headaches

  • stiffness

  • low back tightness

  • fatigue

This is why movement, recovery, strength, and even small micro breaks throughout the day can make such a difference.

2. Chemical Stress

Chemical stress is something many people don’t think about often.

This can include: dehydration, poor nutrition, caffeine overload, inflammation, lack of sleep, alcohol, hormonal changes

The nervous system is constantly responding to what we consume and what we’re exposed to.

The body can also be thought of a little like an orchestra

When everything is working together, the music flows beautifully. But when one section becomes overwhelmed, the whole performance can start to feel a little out of sync.

Simple things like hydration, nourishing food, movement, sunlight, and sleep can help support the nervous system more than many people realise.

3. Emotional & Mental Stress

This is usually the type of stress people recognise most.

Work pressure. Busy schedules. Relationships. Constant notifications. Trying to juggle everything at once.

Sometimes stress can feel like having too many tabs open on a computer

Eventually, the system slows down. And even little things can suddenly feel overwhelming.

When the nervous system stays in that heightened “on alert” state for long periods, it can begin showing up physically through:

  • jaw tension

  • shallow breathing

  • headaches

  • tight shoulders

  • fatigue

  • difficulty relaxing

The important thing to remember is that the body isn’t trying to work against us — it’s trying to adapt and protect us.

Why This Matters

At The Conscious Chiro, we don’t just look at where someone feels pain. We look at the bigger picture.

  • How are they moving?

  • Sleeping?

  • Recovering?

  • Managing stress?

  • Supporting their nervous system?

Because all of these things are connected.

Chiropractic care isn’t about chasing perfection.

It’s about helping support the body’s ability to adapt, regulate, and function well.

Sometimes the most powerful things are also the simplest: taking a walk, stretching between meetings, changing positions regularly,

breathing deeply, drinking water, getting outside, taking small moments to reset. Like a tree in the wind.

The healthiest trees aren’t the ones that never move, they’re the ones that can adapt and stay grounded through changing conditions.

Our bodies and nervous systems work much the same way.

Because when the nervous system feels more supported, the physical body often feels the difference too.
